What a trip!

And I am not sure I mean that in a good way! We have somehow managed to dodge all the nasty weather that is happening all around the country. While we were in Texas visiting relatives there were fires burning all around us. During that time tornados were ripping through Oklahoma, Arkansas, LA and other states injuring and killing many. It is my fear that a tornado is going to pick us up in our motorhome and twirl us around like the Wizard of Oz and set us down some place in Kansas.

When we left Willis TX yesterday it was already hot and humid enough to cause my hair to frizz but by the time we got to Dallas it was windy and kind of cold. After driving 8 hours we arrived at our property in Poteau OK.

It looked so beautiful. Someone had kept it mowed and cleared the area around the pond. Some of the trees and flowers I planted last year died but some made it and I rejoiced in that.

Now for the bad news…. Last year, as we moved the Motorhome into place on the property, it slide around in the rain saturated soil so before we left we contracted with a dozer operator who was highly recommended to put in a gravel road and RV pad after we left. When we arrived at the property and saw our new road it looked beautiful. Ben pulled the motorhome down the road and backed into the pad …. and immediatly sank the motorhome down to the frame. It was like watching it sink into Quick sand. We stared in disbelief at this new predictament. After driving for 8 hours Ben was extremely upset. Sometimes it feels like we fight the universe over this property! Hum.. I wonder if it is haunted and the ghosts don’t want us here.

Today our first order of business is to get ahold of the contractor and get him out here to dig us out and do the job correctly!

Hello Texas

We decided to reverse our annual trip to Oklahoma and go through Texas first, to visit with family and grandchildren. This morning finds us in San Angelo Tx. A wonderful friend of ours is temporarily living here so that she can watch her great grand child for the parents. She has been here about ten months and will be leaving to return home at the end of May.

The drive to San Angelo started in a tiny town called Van Horn TX. The park we stayed at was fine. Clean with full hookups including 50amp at no extra charge! The obligatory train (what is with RV Parks and their proximity to trains!) was near by but we were not near an intersection that required the conductor to blow the horn. A major blessing. Van Horn looks like at one time it might have been a nice little town, but time has taken its toll and most everything is shut down and boarded up. It is a good overnight place and the other RVers must have already known that because we were the only ones who stayed two nights.

We left early in the morning for the 4.5 hour drive to San Angelo. Our garmin directed us off the 10 highway and onto the 67. While the drive was good, there was almost no traffic and high winds so in fact it was a little scary.

We are staying in the San Angelo State Park, the South Entrance. This is our first attempt at State Park Camping and we were very surprised at how nice it is. Although there is no sewer hookups we do have Water and 50 Amp hookups. The spaces are big and pull throughs. Everything is very dry but I was told that this year San Angelo has had no rain and there are fires all around.

Today we are hooking up with our friend who is going to show us the town.

On the road again

Since we spend so much time in our RV, and we also run a business that we have to have phone and internet to stay connected, I thought I would start a journal of sorts on our travels and staying connected.

RV Office

This is our Office in the RV

As I have mentioned in past blogs, we have a mini office set up in our RV. Ben, my husband, built a shelf next to our dining table which has become our office. This shelf holds our network equipment and the VOIP phone that connects to our office phone server. It also hold tons of paperwork and coffee cups and lots of messy things!!. His next project in the motorhome is to build a shelf under this shelf so we can move the Cradlepoint Router and the laptops power cords underneath and out of site. When I asked Ben to sit at his “desk” so I could take the picture he said “No WAY. I haven’t cleaned up” which is the nice part about working out of your RV!

Looking at the photo the small white box on the left attached to the wall is our inside panel Antenna which connects to a trucker antenna on the back of the motorhome and to a SOHO amplifier under our desk. Currently we are not able to use the amplifier because during one leg of our trip Ben forgot to pull the antenna down and the first low hanging tree we came too sheered it right off!! A pitfall indeed. Fortunately everywhere we stayed since that happened has had fairly decent Cell signal and we have been able to work. We have ordered another antenna and it should be waiting for us when we arrive at our daughters house in Buda TX. I am pretty sure we will need it there!!

Congratulations to Wilson Electronics

Wilson Electronic AG Pro 75 amplifier

Wilson Electronic AG Pro 75 amplifier

It is always an exciting time when one of your products is nominated for an award and this year Wilson Electronics had that honor again by being nominated for the Mark of Excellence Award at the Consumer Electronics Association’s (CEA). This year, the AG Pro 75 indoor signal booster was one of only three finalists for the Wireless Product of the Year in the association’s 2011 Mark of Excellence Awards.

The Wilson AG Pro 75  (801280)  is Wilson’s first cellular signal booster to offer adjustable gain control which will help and simplify installation. Since placement of antennas is determined by gain you have more flexibility when placing them.

UPDATE on my Sleek

My Sleek arrived the other day and it is perfect for what I needed, which was a small amplifier for my car. The cradle is small enough to not be an eye-sore or in the way. The package came with several “arms” so we could adjust the cradle to fit all kinds of phones, a blackberry, which is a little big, my pixi which is long and skinny and an old flip phone. We were able to adjust the cradle to fit each of these phones snuggly.  It worked well right out of the box. My husband ran the antenna wire through the front window and under the weather stripping and trim panels so it is hardly noticable.  There was very little flat area in my car to mount it but I did find a small spot close to the windshield. The part that sticks to the car is flexible so you can make curves but for me it keeps coming undone if I am “playing” with my phone, which I shouldn’t be when I am driving. Unfortuatley for me I had to mount it in a place where I can not see the screen really well so the mapping ability of my phone will be a little hard to use, but I have a navigator, so no big deal.

Since the Sleek is a cradle it can only boost one phone, but the price is right. If you want to boost more than one phone you will need a wireless unit, like the MobilePro Wireless Kit, 801242.

The “Can You Hear Me?” advocacy campaign

Several months ago I was notified by Wilson Electronics that the FCC was being petitioned to only allow Cell Service providers to offer Amplifiers. Here is a Statement taken from the website http://hear-me.org/overview.php

“The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has accepted a petition to evaluate tightening certification of cell signal boosters for wireless networks. The FCC has accepted comments on booster use from outside sources and may decide to allow signal boosters to be approved and placed in service only by cell phone service providers, who offer no affordable multi-carrier or mobile boosting solutions, or may not approve the use of signal boosters at all.”

Hear-me.org has been collecting stories from cell boosters users telling of how important it is to be able to continue to use signal amplifiers. Please visit the above website and share your story on how you have used your amplifier and how important it is to you .  They list several way of doing this here  http://hear-me.org/TakeAction.php

Cell phone boosters and amplifiers are very important to many. As RVers we have the opportunity to talk to many who rely on the use of boosters to stay in touch with their family and friends and the internet.  Rural folks need someway of getting a stronger signal and Emergency Personnel want to be able to always maintain contact.

Please don’t let Cell Carriers take over or destroy our right to get a strong signal. Make them put up more towers instead!

Pixi Hotspot not so fast anymore

I had 15 days to try out my new Pixi from Verizon. For 15 days I was thrilled with it but on day 16 the Hotspot (the whole reason I got the phone) got incredibly slow. What’s up with that.

In running another speed test Ben’s Blackberry was faster than the Pixi and the Blackberry Speed wasn’t so great. The strange part was that on the Pixi I can see when I am receiving from the 3G network and while I was testing I was on the 3G network, with 5 bars. I hooked it up to our amplifier and it did increase the speed a bit so I know that helps.

I did manage to increase my speed this morning to acceptable ranges by updating my phone using *228 and pressing 2. I also Cleared the internet cache on my phone. Something helped although I am not sure what exactly did the trick.

Anyway, I have good speeds right now so I better get back to work.

Speed Testing our Verizon Internet Hotspots

We recently turned in my Blackberry Storm for the Palm Pixi, a phone which I will give 5 stars!  I love this little phone.

Since, when we are in our Motorhome, we still have to work we have a VOIP (voice over internet protocol) phone that attaches to our phone server at the office via the internet. The Blackberry has a tether cord that connects the phone to the PC or in our case, to a Cradlepoint CTR500 Mobile router. The mobile router allows us to hardwire the VOIP phone to the internet.

But it was really never a very good connection. While on the VOIP phone, talking to the office or to a customer, the connection was staticy and sometimes we would lose the call all together.

I wanted to see if my new Pixi connected to the internet was any faster than Ben’s Blackberry. I ran a speedtest at Speakeasy.net and what I found was an eye opener. The Pixi was almost twice as fast on the download side than the Blackberry.  We even connected the VOIP to the Pixi Hotspot (I had to buy a wireless adapter to do this) and still got twice the download speed than on the dedicated Internet connection from the Blackberry.

We will continue to test this connection all week before we make any decision to upgrade Ben’s Blackberry but it looks like that may be the way to go.

My Sleek is coming today

Today I should receive the Wilson Electronic Sleek (815226) for my own personal use. I live in the San Bernardino Mountains in Southern California. We have very curvy roads and lots of cell signal dead zones where my cell phone goes by-by. When its snowing really hard I am nervous enough but losing my ability to call someone makes it even scarier. Believe it or not we get up to 15 feet of snow where I live in the winter. Wilson Electronic's Sleek Cell Phone Booster

I talked about wanting to put a cell phone booster in my car and finally decided on the Sleek. I like it because it is a cradle and will fit all cell phones. It also says it will charge my phone battery but I haven’t figured out how yet. Guess I will have something to report back to you.

I am looking forward to trying it out. I will let you know what I think

Working from our RV

When we are on the road in our RV we have to continue to work. Our work is based on being able to connect to the internet.  Both my husband, Ben and I have smart phones hooked up to the Verizon network. He has a Blackberry Storm and I have the Palm Pixi. Both of our phones have the optional “hotspot” service on them.

The Blackberry Storm is not a real hotspot since it has to be tethered to the computer to get internet to his laptop. The Palm Pixi, however, is a true hotspot and able to connect up to 5 computers. For some reason the connection to the internet on the Pixi seems to be a lot faster than the Blackberry. Since the Pixi is a new phone for me and Ben’s Blackberry is 2 years old, maybe it is just slowing down in it’s old age!!

Although I really like the Pixi, one of the reasons we have not yet traded it in for a newer phone for Ben is because it does tether. With the tether we are able to connect the phone to a Cradlepoint CTR500 mobile router which allows us to have one ethernet wired connection which we hook into our VOIP phone which is connected to our office.   The CTR500 is also a wireless router and can connect not only other laptops to the internet but we can connect both of our laptops to our wireless printer!  Sweet.
